A bit of our story…..
In 1999, after an extensive and diverse career in several trades in residential, and commercial construction, I had to retire my tool belt. Not by choice, for health reasons. This also led to making a major life move, and it was that choice that led us to find the former Maryfield Union Hospital, built in 1948.
It was a giant white elephant, waiting for myself, Jaynè Childs and my partner, Richard Childs, who is a master Stone Mason/Bricklayer and carpenter. Together we had worked on several projects and knew we were a strong team with the skills needed to take on the creating of Atelier Estate as our home, studios, gallery and gardens.
I learned to adapt, to be able to physically work on many projects, slower than before but I figured out ways to do what needed to be done. Along with creating many art works, in several mediums, I filled Atelier’s walls and the next two and a half decades.
Organized and held many different events at Atelier; Art Shows, Community Fundraisers, Mother’s Day Teas, House Concerts of travelling musicians, family weddings. The first decade we opened Atelier’s doors as a Bed and Breakfast. Welcomed guests from around the world, many who had been born in the building. Shared the building with the local community over the decades, and always respected it’s unique history.
Atelier is evolving and embracing the future, with new growth in the gardens and the Manor. I have formally retired the Curling Champion Art Portfolio and the Village Flowers Portfolio. I broke my wrist this summer. The cast is finally off, will need lots of rehab but looking ahead.
I look forward to getting back into the studio. Creating and sharing new easel work.
I appreciate your time,
Jaynè Childs
